These can be both modern and ancient; American-influenced or Mayan-born. If you can’t think of any beyond Corona’s lime ritual, feel free to make up one.
I participated in a traditional Maya curing ritual while working in Yucatan. The “curandero” requested that we bring two bottles of rum – we wanted to bring the best rum for this ceremony, but he said “no”, that the ancestors wanted the “people’s rum” (poor quality cane alcohol). In between Mayan chants and prognostications, we drank straight cane alcohol out of gourds (always first offered to a Catholic image on his wall).
The most important (and traditional) element of the drinking ritual was to always pass the gourd to the left (clockwise). After 4 hours of ceremony, we were all well-toasted, and had observed an amazing series of traditional Maya rituals.
My friend ordered this at a Mexican restaurant and it was really good! She said it was a bunch of different spices w/ a lot of lime and beer… I really want one and she’s in Mexico for the next week so I can’t ask her how to make one or what it’s called!!!
Its called “Michelada” If you are going to the northern part of Mexico, you can simply order a “Chelada” which is only beer and lemon on a jar. If you want the spices, order it as “Michelada”, and you will get beer with lemon, some sweet and sour tamarind and worcestershire sauce. (also they use “salsa maggi” but I don’t know how to they call it in english). Either ways, the waiter will ask with what beer you want it prepared with. Light: SOL, Corona, XX, Tecate, Tecate Light. Dark: INDIO, XX Ambar, etc
It was in Cozumel, Mexico. They used an assortment of tomato juice, margarita mix, tequila, grapefruit juice, grenadine and a brown sauce called Jugo (I think) and they added a few other things too.
Sounds like a SANGRITA: Sangrita is a tomato juice based drink that is often used as a cocktail mixer or drunk alongside tequila as a chaser. Not to be confused with “sangria,” a fruit and wine concoction, this beverage is a tangy mixture of tomato and orange juices, usually spiked with hot chiles and lime juice. It may sound odd in flavor, but sangrita is the perfect accompaniment to good quality tequila, like an aged añejo or a good reposado. The tequila and sangrita are poured into separate shot glasses and the two are alternately sipped, not chased. First the tequila, then the chilled sangrita. Slowly, one after the other. There are many recipes for sangrita but most contain tomato juice, lime juice, pureed onion, salt, and chili sauce. The drink is popular in the home state of tequila, Jalisco.
FRUITY SANGRITA: Jugo is Spanish for juice. Serves about 4 1 cup tomato juice 1 tablespoon grenadine syrup 2 measures of margarita mix 2 shots of tequila (to taste) Juice of 3 limes Juice of 2 oranges Juice of 1 grapefruit finely minced fresh green chiles (serranos or jalapeños) to taste Salt to taste METHOD: Mix the ingredients in a blender or pitcher. Because the intensity of fresh juices and chiles vary, mix most of the ingredients, then taste and adjust accordingly. Chill well. Serve in shot glasses accompanied by shot glasses of tequila for sipping alternately. Best served with a good quality tequila.
