You don't need a stone to cook this on, but you'll have to watch so as not to burn the bottom of the ring - crescent rolls usually don't bake for 30 minutes. This is why the stone is better to use, but it is not essential.

If you are going to purchase a stone, I would recommend that you get a Pampered Chef one because the ones in Kohl's, BB&Beyond, Target, etc are usually not made for anything except for "dry" bread or dough and not good to use with oily or fatty things like the crescent rolls. They tend to absorb the oils and not release them when cleaned so they end up becoming rancid-smelling. You can contact me through my profile if you're interested in getting a Pampered Chef stone. I will be happy to give you any more information you would like to have about our stoneware so that you can make an educated decision.
References :
Pampered Chef consultant for 10 years

You don't need a pizza stone. A cookie sheet or a 9 x 13 should work.

One of the advantages of a pizza stone is the ability for it to hold heat. This is acheived by preheating the stone in the oven.

However, the recipe is using the stone as a baking sheet so any benefits are in some respects minimized.

That's why you don't really need a pizza stone.

You can find pizza stones in most stores... Wal-Mart, Target, Kohl's... prices average around $20.
